Cambridge International AS Language and Literature in English will provide learners with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to produce writing to specific briefs and for given audiences. They will also gain further knowledge and understanding of international poetry, prose and drama.

Students take two papers for this course.

Paper 1 - English Language:

  2. Meaning and Style: Analyzing linguistic elements and their combinations to create meaning. Choices regarding form, structure, and language contribute to the distinctive style of a text.
  3. Audience: Identifying and analyzing strategies writers use to communicate with their intended audience. Recognizing and predicting audience responses is crucial for effective communication.
  4. Creativity: Demonstrating creativity in writing for specific purposes and audiences, interpreting challenging texts, and acquiring language in various contexts.

Paper 2 - Literature in English:

  1. Language: Exploring the use of language in literary texts and understanding how literary techniques contribute to a reader's analysis and comprehension of the text.
  2. Form: Considering how writers use or deviate from literary conventions in prose, poetry, and drama to convey meaning and create effects.
  3. Structure: Analyzing the organization, shape, and development of a text or passage and how it enhances the reader's understanding of its meaning and effects.
  4. Genre: Exploring the characteristics of different text types, such as tragedy, comedy, and satire.
  5. Context: Investigating the relationship between a text and its historical, social, and cultural background to gain insights into its interpretation.
  6. Style: Analyzing the writer's use of language and style across various forms, genres, and periods and how it contributes to meaning and effects for different audiences.
  7. Interpretation: Evaluating and explaining different ideas within a text, fostering critical thinking and deeper understanding.
